Best Year Ever For Our Hellebores

This has been the best year ever for our Hellebores.  I love them anyway, because they bloom in winter.  But this year they are putting on quite a show with very big flowers and lots and lots of them.  I have increased my already large collection by no less than five Hellebores.

This is a purple Hellebore I have in my front yard.  They are slow growers, so it will be a couple more years before it fills out more.

Also in my front yard, this Hellebore is right alongside my front walkway.  I love having some flowers to show off this time of year.

This is ne of my double Hellebores.  (I now have three)  This beauty is a brand new on that I got at the Seattle Flower And Garden Show last week.

This is one of the tiniest Hellebores I have ever seen.  It is another of our new ones.  We got this at a garden center in Portland.  So far we have it in a pot.  I don’t yet know where we will plant this one.

Very similar to the other double Hellebore by my front door, this one is a little darker in color.  This one is also new and still in a pot.  This brings the total number of double hellebores I have to three.  I love them all.

I am in love with this red and white Hellebore.  We also got this one in Portland a few weeks ago.  So far, it is in a pot.

This beautiful green one is one of four Hellebores that was here when we bought the house five years ago.

And this stinking hellebore is one of the other Hellebores that was already here when we moved in.

This is a Hellebore we have in our back yard along the fence.

This is a double Hellebore I have had for several years.  It has gotten very big by now.  We got this at Heronswood Nursery years ago.  It is one of the doubles developed by Dan Hinkley.  I loved that nursery.  Too bad he sold it.

Also in our back yard, this speckled Hellebore is right under my bedroom window where I can see it.

This purple Hellebore is also beneath my window along with the double one.

There are three other Hellebores that were in areas that were too dark to photograph and my camera didn’t want to take a picture.  I do hope that you have enjoyed the ones I did get to photograph though.  I noticed that one of my daffodils was blooming yesterday along with my snowdrops and crocuses.  The spring is starting here and I am So happy about it.

  1. Your link on Fertilizer Friday grabbed my eye immediately… you have beautiful hellebores… I only hope ours do half as well as yours this season! At this point they are snug beneath huge drifts of snow… the double from Dan Hinkley is outstanding! A few weeks ago I did a post on our hellebores and asked folks about their maintenance routine… I would be interested in how you deal with seedlings especially… Great post! Larry

      Thanks for dropping by. I don’t do much to my Hellebores other than cut down the leaves when they get ratty. I don’t use fertilizer other than some compost and the leaves that fall naturally. Hope yours come forth soon.

  4. I am not familiar with this flower, helebores. I will look it up. I would love to have something to bloom in the winter. It may not be cold enough in Central Ky. Your flowers and your photos are beautiful. Over from Sunlit Sunday.

      Thanks for coming by and for your comment. I think hellebores are ok for Central Kentucky. Are you about zone 7? I am in zone 8. They should do fine there as I know they can be grown in Indiana and are hardy in zones 4-8.

  5. The hellebores are gorgeous; I didn’t realize they came in so many different colours. You’ve reminded me to look into the dates for a big garden show not too far from me.

    1. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for your comment. There is a huge array of colors for hellebores, mostly in the purple, pink, white and green range ; but there are now some yellow ones. I really love hellebores, because they bloom in winter and are so pretty.

  7. Your Hellebores look wonderful. I used to have some but they’ve disappeared. I didn’t know there were so many varieties. Mine would bloom and there was snow all around them! Amazing little plant!
