Here it is the Ides of March in our Pacific Northwest town. Everything is really going in the garden right now. I drove downtown this week for the first time in about a week and everything has suddenly changed. The Cherries are blooming, everybody’s Daffodils are blooming, and some Rhododendrons are blooming. Everything is looking gorgeous. Real signs of Spring, which is only a few days away.

Things are happening in my yard too. I have Forsythia blooming on the side of the house and my Pink Flowering Current is almost in full bloom now.

A blooming Pieris is very fragrant my front door. And my Daphne Odora is very fragrant by my back door.

Daffodils

The Crocuses and Snowdrops have come and gone. We have lots of Daffodils blooming right now in various places.  Along with the Daffs, some of the Tulips are starting to show color. I can’t wait to see them.

Hyacinths

We have a few Hyacinths blooming. I think we need more. And my Muscari has even started blooming.

Pruning is going slowly, because we have been interrupted by lots of rain. However, I have gotten almost all of my Clematises pruned and I just pruned my Rugosa Roses this last week. I have a lot of cold damage on my shrubs because of a very hard freeze that we had in December. There are some shrubs which I don’t know whether they are going to make it. But I will give them this year to see. Then if they don’t make, it we have planting opportunities.

I removed the tarp from the bed kept the Dahlias in last year. I don’t know if any of them made it, because the hard freeze in December, but we will see. Again, there could be planting opportunities. I do have blueberries that could go in there.

Looking out my back door, some of the trees are starting to leaf out already. Things are looking good this beautiful mid-March day.

  2. Enjoying your spring, on a windy 46 degree day in upstate New York. The snow is melting. Eventually, spring will come. Thank you for the sneak peak. You have plants that will never grow here (such as the Daphne). Wish I was there – really! Happy GBBD.

  3. Oh glorious spring!!! I went to the garden store yesterday in hopes of some new plants, but they didn’t have much. I hope to get some hydrangeas soon! My peach trees are blooming right now! I can’t wait to eat peaches later this summer! Loving your budding garden! I can’t wait to see it in full bloom this spring!
