I Spoke Too Soon Snow Day

Snow Day
Snow Day

I spoke too soon. Last week I was showing off my Spring shoots and flowers. Today I have three inches of snow on the ground, and I am waiting to go to the airport to fly out, with promises of freezing rain later in the day.

I got quite a few photos of the snow falling yesterday. The birds were very active, but my kitties only wanted to stay in, because it was so cold. So, here are a few vistas of white outside my window. As if some of you needed more.

Squirrel And Flicker
Squirrel And Flicker

This one is my favorite. A squirrel has taken over the bird feeder, while a Northern Flicker is waiting on the fence. He soon flew over to the suet feeder. Both were on their respective feeders for quite awhile.

At the same time, another Flicker was on my front feeder.

Later, Starlings fought over the feeders, squeezing out the other birds. They came anyway.

They just adjourned to eat the seeds that spilled on the ground. This kept up all day long.

The Lone Towhe
The Lone Towhe

There was a lone Towhe in our Dogwood. His little red breast stood out in the gray and white all around.

And so it went the rest of the day. Little accumulation occurred until the evening, when about three inches of snow fell. I was concerned about prospects for more, because I had to get to the airport this morning. But I was lucky, and there were no problems getting to the airport. I’m also lucky that I leave before freezing rain arrives, and it won’t return until it is all over. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy these few photos I have of the snow and the birds.

PS. This is what it looks like today.  Thanks to a photo I received from home.  And an ice storm is moving in this afternoon.  I wonder if I’ll even get home from So Cal.

  1. Hello, Yael

I see you have just a little bit of snow at your home, so not much shoveling would have been needed. What fun to watch the wildlife in your yard enjoying the food you’ve provided. One of the pleasures of this season is seeing animals and colourful birds set off against a background of winter shades.

    Enjoy your trip to California.

Thanks for stopping. I do hope you manage to get to Florida. You are probably getting the front that passed over us last Friday. I return to 12 inches. Have fun.

  3. Glad you got out in time. The snow mostly missed us here on Vancouver Island. I was hoping for a little more. But now it’s beginning to rain. Hope it doesn’t freeze. Have a nice time visiting.

Thanks for coming by. Goodness, I hope you don’t have it freeze either. We will start to get rain late today and the rest of the week. Thank goodness, it is warming, though. So I hope there will be no freezing rain.

  4. I just love to see the birds in the yard. You have many more kinds than I do. We use to have more kinds at our home in Michigan but so far have not had a lot of variety. Hope you have a safe trip! Thanks for visiting my blog! Nancy

    1. Hi Nancy,

Thanks for coming by. I’m back home safe and sound. We had plenty of snow on the ground still nearly 6 inches. Now it is almost all gone because we’ve had nothing but rain since.

    1. Hi Vicki,

Thank you for stopping. Nice to meet you too. We completely dodged the bullet with the freezing rain. Now is just plain rain and most of the snow is melted.

  8. We had a warm snap in January and I started to hear all kinds of singing birds. I kept thinking Man, those birds are going to be disappointed when they realize they are in Maine and it’s only January!
