In Search Of Spring

It’s about that time to go In Search Of Spring.  With New England just having been hammered last week with several feet of snow, it is hard to conceive of this.  Yet, in our Zone 7-8 area in the Pacific Northwest we are starting to see some Spring flowers and other concrete signs of Spring.

Shoots On RoseNear Valentines Day is about the time we are able to prune roses and other shrubs, as long as you aren’t whacking off spring flowers. Just a few days ago, I checked my shrubs and almost nothing had buds beginning to break.  Today, I saw lots.  Time to break out my pruners.

Lots of bulbs are coming up.

SnowdropsMy Snowdrops are already blooming.

 

CrocusesAnd today my first Crocuses will open up.

 

Bud On DaffodilAll my Daffodils are up and some even have buds.

 

TulipsTulips are up, but of course there is no sign of buds yet.

 

HelleboreMy Hellebores have been blooming for some time.

CyclamenAnd my Spring flowering Cyclamen are in bloom.

Some of my shrubs are either blooming already or are getting ready to bloom.

Sarcacocca BloomingThe Sarcacocca is blooming and sending it’s fragrance across the yard.

PierisMy Pieris has lots of buds and will bloom in fragrant white drops later on.

Red Flowering Currant BudsThe Red Flowering Currant’s buds are beginning to get fat and will give me gorgeous drooping pink flowers in March.

I’m really getting really psyched and plan to go out pruning today.

  2. Hi Yael: So nice to hear from you! I hadn’t decorated for Valentine’s Day in quite a while, but it just seemed like the thing to do this year. And I am with you–I am ready for spring to arrive. I love your snowdrops, and the cyclamen are amazing. I’ve never grown those, and would love to give them a try. Your hellebore are gorgeous, too–mine have buds but aren’t in bloom yet. I’ve got a winter jasmine that’s in full bloom right now–yellow flowers against these grey, rainy skies always make me happy! Have a great week.

      Thanks for stopping by and thanks for your comment. Now winter jasmine is one thing I don’t have. It certainly is beautiful. I got out pruning yesterday. Not quite ready to tackle my roses yet, though.

      I love it when the crocuses and snowdrops start to bloom. One of my first memories is of crocuses blooming through the snow in my cold Midwest childhood home.

  12. Such a treat to see all your welcome signs of spring! We are about a month away from spring here in the Midwest, but I’m still getting antsy.

    Enjoyed seeing your garden “helpers” on your sidebar; I have a similar crew and also had a Max now in the catnip fields in the sky. Happy Bloom Day!

      Thanks and thanks for coming by. I used to live in the Midwest and the two things that stood out for us awaiting Spring were the arrival of the Robins and our crocuses coming up. Thanks for mentioning my “crew”. I’m sitting here surrounded by all three of them.

  13. Another pacific northwest gardener here (Kitsap County) and there is an abundance of early spring signs here too. One of the things I love about gardening in our region is the mild winters and the fast and gentle launch into spring. I have been taking advantage of the past week or so to do a lot of the landscape plant pruning. Lots of buds, emerging plants from dormant crowns, and even some lovely primroses blooming. It’s all good. 😀

    1. KitsapFG, The mild winters are one of the things I love about the PNW also. And I too have been pruning for during this past week. Down here in Oregon, we are heading to Seattle Flower And Garden Show on Wednesday. Can’t wait. Love the Flower And Garden Show.

  18. We are at least a month behind you. But oh how I am counting the days. Daffodils are starting to poke their heads up. We trim roses in March. My lawn is still covered in snow. Thanks for sharing with Share Your Cup.

  19. My daffies are blooming now too; the paperwhites have been at it for a month. Strange weather we’re having; it’s snowing today. I need to get out and prune some stuff too; I usually do it at New Years but didn’t have time
