Last Of The Roses

Can you believe I cut the Last of the Roses yesterday in my Zone 8 Oregon garden?  Well here they are.  This is it for the year, because I did my Fall Rose Pruning yesterday, at least before it started to rain.

Fall Rose Pruning

.  In general, if you do Fall Rose Pruning at all (some sources recommend not to do it (Rodale), while others (Heirloom Roses and Oregon Master Gardeners) recommend pruning no more than a third of the height to prevent wind damage.  (To about 30 inches high)
.  Also, cut out diseased or crossing branches.
.  Heirloom Roses also suggests, thinning out the small spindly canes which can whip about in the wind and damage other canes.
.  This pruning should be done after the first frost, so you will not stimulate new growth and promote dieback.
.  Then do a good Spring Pruning after the threat of a hard frost is over (around Valentines Day in my area.)
Yes, I am doing this fairly late, but this fall has been so mild that it has only frosted about five or six times so far.  It has allowed a lot of black spot to develop on my roses, so I will now have to go back and clean up the ground from all the leaves that have fallen.  Then I will do my regular Spring Rose Pruning around the end of February.
ILast Roses Mosaicn the mean time, we are enjoying the very last remains of the roses in my kitchen.

  1. I just cut the roses this afternoon in anticipation of 3 freezes this week. We also haven’t had many frosts yet, and the roses are going great. We’re covering some in hopes of keeping them closer to Christmas (North Texas is cold one day and hot the next in December). Black spot has been a problem the last two weeks even on my antique roses and Knockouts. I hate to see them go. We usually trim early February on the few days the wind isn’t freezing. The Banksias get trimmed after the blooms fade in May. I love my roses.

  4. I used to prune them in the fall, and now I’m trying not pruning them. I think the tips about the canes whipping about in the wind makes good sense so now I may go trim them a bit. How lovely to have roses blooming so late!

  11. Im a zone 5, so my roses have been long gone. I do prune my roses in late fall to about the 30″, makes clean up so much easier in spring. Thanks for stopping by and liking my natural candle bobeches. PS – following you on linky!

  13. Hi Yael, Your roses look pretty! Love the peach-colored ones. I think I pruned mine too early. They don’t seem to have put up new growth for the most part, so hopefully they’ll be ok. We are zone 5 so a lot colder than you are; however, it’s been a mild fall so far with temps in the 50s this week. We have had cold weather though; it just seems to be interspersed with warm days.

  17. Wow! I didn’t even know that zone 8 was up there in Oregon! I thought the northern states were mainly 7 and below! How cool is that. We have a few stragglers here – we’ll get our first hard freeze this weekend. Here in Georgia we’re zone 7 – 8
