Fall Garden Hangers On

As fall deepens in our area, fall color is well past prime and leaves are falling on most of the trees, except for our Sweet Gum which don’t lose their leaves until December here.  Still there are some Fall Garden Hangers On at my place with Flowers Blooming.

Coral Bark Maple Color TransformationI have had some gorgeous color on my Coral Bark Maple.  Last week the leaves turned from a golden yellow on Monday and got a little more orange as the week went by.  I took photos on a daily basis until Wednesday, then the rain and wind moved in.  The tree went from the gorgeous yellow, and progressively more orange leaves to brown and almost bare today.

For The BirdsEven though my Burning Bush has lost its leaves, the bare branches reveal hundreds of tiny berries that the birds are loving.  I have had chickadees, juncos and small finches dining on the berries.  In my backyard, the Stellars Jays are making themselves regular visitors, and I am glad.

Dahlias Still BloomingElsewhere in the garden several of my dahlias are still going strong, while the others have been cut back and moved into the garage.  The Red Pinwheel Dahlia, Purple and White Dahlia, Pink Dahlia and a Yellow and Peach Dahlia are among those still blooming.

Clematises And Beauty BerriesTwo Clematise, Niobi and my Bluish Purple one are still continuing to bloom like crazy.  And both of my two different Beauty Berries are continuing to put on a show.

A Few More Hangers OnI am still getting some flowers on my Honeysuckle, as well as a few flowers on one of my Daylilies and some of my Roses.  The Red Valerian, on the other hand shows no sign of letting up and I have tons of seedlings that I will have to cull.

Is It Spring YetThere are even some signs of the coming spring.  My Muscari is beginning to come up, while my Flowering Quince doesn’t seem to know what season this is and is blooming now.  I Finished building my Raised Beds yesterday and filled them up.  Now I can plant them up this spring.  In the mean time, I have some cover crop seed that may or may not sprout at this time of year.  The Mesculun Mix that I planted earlier, is giving me some nice salads right now.

In all, I am happy to have these Hangers On, even though we have now had our first taste of winter rains.  Do you have any Fall Garden Hangers On or Previews of Spring??

    1. Hi Leslie,

Thanks for dropping by. Yes, I have lots of muscari coming up and I even think I have seen a daffodil trying to poke its head up. We are due for a storm this week, so we will see if any of my dahlias make it beyond then, and I will probably have lots of leaf loss on our sweet gum.

Thanks and thanks for coming by. We will get a blast from Brutus and we’ll see what is still looking good then. BTW, I really like the new header on your blog.

    1. Button,

Thanks for stopping by. I never did have kale, but do have some salad greens growing. Other than that, I had only tomatoes this year. Now that I have mad two new raised beds, I plan on lots more than flowers, and just put in onion starts I had in a pot all summer. Scattered some seed for crimson clover. We will see if it even sprouts this late in fall. If not, I will put down more mulch.

  2. Lisa,

Hope you didn’t have any (or not much) damage by Sandy…..and now Athena. My sister is near DC and an aunt inland in Connecticut. Both were fine, gratefully. We are due for some of Brutus’ winds and rain, so I will probably lose more leaves and maybe the remnants of my flowers. We will see.

    1. Hi Beth,

We are having some cold and rain moving in and we just moved the dahlias into the garage yesterday. Leaves from the sweet gum are piling up now. The birds are having a good time with all the berries on my burning bush.

It sure looks like you have been enjoying what is left of the beautiful fall foliage. I am really going to miss it. Our leaves are all down now. Lovely mosaics!

    1. Donna,

In the few days since I posted this the weather has turned pretty cold and I am losing much of what I had the early part of the week. Still some things to do in the garden before I call it a year. Next stop….Primroses in January and seed catalogs.

  5. wow, you still have a lot of beauty in your yard. The only thing I have is green Larkspur coming up all over. Alot of the garden is covered in snow. We went from the high 70’s to the 40’s in just a days time. Can’t complain. We really need the moisture. Thanks for sharing with Share Your Cup.

  6. You have lots of lovely fall hangers-on round your place. Frost last weekend ended the dahlias here, and the leaves were mostly blown off in wind and rain. But the carpet of leaves on the ground is pretty.

    1. Lorrie,

Thanks for coming by. The flowers are now coming to an end here too. My dahlias are in the garage although I still have one clematis that is continuing to bloom. We are getting quite a carpet of leaves too, and it is pretty.

    1. Hi Kathy,

Thanks for coming by. Our oaks last a long timne here too. The sweet gums are the ones on our block that last and last until most other trees are bare. Mine is finally turning yellow.
