Fall is in full swing in my neck of the woods. Still, we are getting 70 and 80 degree weather, and last night it got very near freezing for the first time. (There was a hint of frost this morning.) In the last few days, I have had quite a few Fall Garden Surprises. Flowers that never bloomed are blooming and some others are blooming again. I thought I would give you a look.
These beautiful Colchicums appeared in my garden this fall. I planted them two years ago, and nothing happened last year. This spring I noticed the foliage, which I knew meant that I would have some Colchicums in my garden this fall. Well here they are. Aren’t they beautiful?
This new dahlia is one I planted this spring in a pot. It has not yet bloomed, but it looks like it will be yellow. Can’t wait till it opens.
This is another of my new dahlias that has not bloomed all summer until now. I am thrilled with it. See how pretty it is?
This hosta had stopped blooming. Yet here it is, sending up more blooms. I was thrilled to see this.
My new Cranesbill Geranium is blooming again. It bloomed last spring, and here it is again. I love the color of this one.
Can you believe that my Japanese Anemone is actually reaching the bottom branches of my dogwood? They are at least 6-7 feet tall this year. Unbelievable.
This lonely Sunflower is the only one to bloom this year. This is in the bed I recently made after rebuilding my fence and adding an evergreen clematis and lots of compost. This is one of the many things that sprouted from my compost, ready to bloom at summers end.
Not only did I have a sunflower in the same bed, but I had all kinds of tomatoes and pumpkins sprout. The tomatoes have small tomatoes on them, but they will not ripen, since frost is on the horizon.
My new Iris Beds are finally complete. After setting out my bottle border and finishing the bed with bricks, doing massive weeding, and getting some help adding soil and compost, it is finally done. (Some of the irises were pretty dessicated, but they should revive by next spring and will hopefully give flowers.) So happy to have this done.
The rest of my dahlias are still going, but this is about the end. It is so nice to have all of these late season surprises. And even nicer to have my iris beds finally finished. I hope to get pumpkins this weekend, so I can start decorating for Halloween.

That’s one impressive anemone! I love surprises in the garden. (Fun ones, anyway!) Not too long ago I had a few balloon flowers open up – I had totally forgotten that I had planted any!
That dahlia is beautiful….you still have alot of lovely things going on in your garden. My annuals are still doing well…though I think that tonight may be our first heavy frost. My surprise is a canna lily coming into bloom again…though will she survive the frost, who knows…..

I cut down my tomatoes last week and harvested what was there. The semi-green ones have been ripening all week. Today I found a few that had fallen off outside ripe. I would say this is the end of them for sure. We have been bordering on the edge of freezing for three nights now, but the daytime temps are 75. This weekend we will finally have some rain.
There’s always a surprise or two. One that you may be interested in is that I brought in all the tomatoes for fear of frost even the very small ones. They’ve ripened quite well and we’re eating them. Waste not want not. I also found herbs growing beneath the tomatoes that I had forgotten were there in the jungle. The tall phlox began to bloom again and the Stella D’oro lilies have sent out new buds. Don’t know if they’ll all make it, though. Nothing as wonderful as what you have with all the variety and color.

It’s odd that your colchicums didn’t bloom last year because they’ll flower just sitting on the kitchen counter. Strange weather makes for strange happenings in the garden though. My ‘Bloomerang’ lilac from Proven Winners has bloomed again for several weeks this fall – this is a first, even though it is supposed to bloom again.
It was just above freezing here this morning, we finally put the furnace on.

Thanks for coming by. Interesting about your lilac. That must be a treat. I just picked a few strawberries yesterday, and ours may rebloom, but usually have no time to ripen. My biggest surprise occurred yesterday. The Rose of Sharon I have planned to try to train into a standard surprised me with a branch that produced flowers that were a different color than the rest of the plant. So much for my plan to grow it into a standard. I want both colors, so I will now try to train it into a V shape with just a few trunks. I’m psyched by this discovery.

I have yet to try autumn crocus, but yours are so pretty I know I must give them a try. I also really like your yellow dahlia. I can’t say that I have any late-season plant surprises this year, but the flowers are still looking pretty good. They are appreciating the rain, and the still fairly mild weather here. The branches were so heavy with rain on my butterfly bush–I had to prune it back today so that my side pathway could be passable. Take care, and have a wonderful rest of your weekend!
