Ipad Tote

 

 

Do you have an IPad? I have had my IPad for about two years and sometimes I need to take it with me shopping. I have never had anything to carry it in until now, and needed an IPad tote. One time I even left my IPad in a store and panicked until I got back to the into the store to retrieve it.

At that point it was really urgent that I find a tote that I could take my IPad in, which would also double as a purse. I found a nice one in Fry’s electronics in Los Angeles but didn’t want to pay the sales tax as Oregon, where I live, does not have one. That was the point at which I decided I will make my own Ipad tote.

So I begin looking for a pattern that will work for both my IPad and the double as a purse. And I decided to take the bag making class at our local quilting store, Greenbaum’s Quilted Forest. Finding a pattern was easier said than done. So I asked for help from the class instructor, Janae King, to find a pattern that work as both an IPad tote and a purse.

She didn’t know the pattern offhand but said I can draft one, and bring the instructions to class when we have it. Wow! – I thought a custom pattern.

So Janae and I sat down and figured out how large I want to the tote and how many pockets I wanted in it and where. She then told me how much fabric she thought I would need and said that she would bring a draft of the pattern to class.

So here is what we came up with.

This is my IPad tote.  Isn’t it cute?  I Love the fabrics and that cute button for the closure.  It goes up and down and has two pockets, one inside and one outside underneath the flap.  The strap is also adjustable.

A look all the way to the bottom of the tote.  It is deep enough for my IPad, and is well padded with a layer of heavy interfacing.  Look at the cute ribbon I found to trim the pockets.  Looks just like the trim fabric, and it provides extra stability to the pockets.  I also used that ribbon as the loop closure for the tote.

See, I can put my wallet inside the interior of the tote.  Nice and secure inside.

The IPad goes into the main compartment of the tote.  I wanted it to fit up and down rather than sideways.  I thought it would be easier to handle.

Now, I can get All of the stuff I want into the tote and use it as both a tote for my IPad and as a purse, and I can take the IPad with me when I want to use it while shopping.  And I don’t have to worry about leaving the IPad somewhere.

The bag making class was great.  It was a workshop that lasted all day, and the end product is this great IPad tote.  I’m happy because I have a tote that was designed just to do exactly what I wanted it to.

And Janae King, the instructor, recognized an opportunity.  She plans to turn this design into a pattern for her line of bag and purse patterns that she can sell online through her website (JanaeKing.blogspot.com) or in quilt shops like Greenbaums Quilted Forest.  (No, I don’t benefit from saying this.)

      Thanks. Making tomato sauce sounds great. I called it a season this last weekend and harvested all the almost ripe tomatoes and took out the plants. Time for us to build those veggie beds I talked about right in that spot. The renovated flower beds are coming along, and almost done.

      Thanks. I am really liking this tote. Now I can take consumers reports with me when I go shopping or just sit and play on the internet if I am waiting for my car to get washed. Not to mention, this may replace my backpack on an airplane.
