Red White And Blue Not A Party For Pets

Red White And Blue Not A Party For Pets. While you and I are ready to celebrate the Fourth of July with parties, picnics, good food and fireworks; just remember that it is not much of a party time for our pets.  In fact it can be downright dangerous.

Dogs, cats and other furry friends can become frightened by the fireworks and other loud noises.  Crazy drivers present a danger to pets, as do kids looking for mischief.  Even normal fun activities are not without risk to pets.

Here are some recommendations from the ASPCA for 4th of July Pet Safety:

.  Do Not use fireworks around your pets.  They can frighten them, harm them, and even burned out fireworks pose a risk, because of toxic chemical residue.

.  Beware of having charcoal lighting fluid, citronella candles, matches,  insect repellents and other hazardous materials where your pets can get them.  These can be harmful to your pet.

.  Don’t use insect repellant or sunscreen on your pets unless it is specifically for pets.

.  Avoid giving your pets holiday goodies to eat.  Keep them on their normal diet.  They can get indigestion from too much good stuff.

.  And don’t take them to the parks with you.  Many people are shooting off firecrackers.  The noise and commotion can frighten them, and some pets can get lost or run away.  Not a place to be for your furry friend.

.  Lastly, keep pets indoors on the Fourth in a quiet secluded room where they can stay calm and can’t run away.

I had a chance to talk to my vet the other day when my kitty had a bee sting, and we discussed strategies for keeping my cats safe and calm during the Fourth of July holiday.  She confirmed some of the things I already do to keep my cats calm and safe.  (My cats, especially my Zoe, black one, get pretty scared from fireworks and orange boy, Raja, startles easily).

This is what I do:

.  Keep my cats indoors on the 4th of July.  (Halloween also)

.  Play soothing music.  (This provides some white noise as well as a soothing melody.  I like to use Celtic or New Age music for this)

.  Start a day or so before using some Rescue Remedy in my cats’ water.  This is a naturopathic Bach Flower remedy, which really does have a calming effect..  Also start a day before using a Felway diffuser.  This is a pheromone that has a calming effect and is also naturopathic.  We also found a collar in a pet store with what my vet believes is also this Felway phermone.  Gonna try that one.

.  Keep a watch on my cats the day after the Fourth, because some people are still setting off fireworks.

This seems to help my pets.  My vet concurred with my methods.  I am glad that she likes natural methods to keep the cats calm.  We discussed sedatives, but decided they won’t need them with the steps I already take.  (The ASPCA also recommends secluding your pets on the 4th.). As with any remedy, you should discuss it with your own vet.

We are ready for Independence Day on the 4th.  Are you?

  2. Those are beautiful pictures. Our cat seems to do pretty well on the 4th, but it sure does put our chickens in a fit. Last year they all slept on top of each other in an nesting box for 2 weeks after the fireworks ended.

The 4 th is fun, but I do feel sorry for the animals who get frightened by the noise.

  3. Great tips for pets on the 4th of July — we live in the country, so unless we set off the fireworks (which are not this year) there’s no worries.

Loving your red, white and blue flowers. Gorgeous!

  4. Our kitties are inside kitties, and so they normally don’t have a problem on the 4th. They do have a quiet bedroom in the back of the house where they can go hang out if they need some privacy. Your pet tips make a lot of sense, so thank you for sharing them. I also really like your flower collages–very pretty. Take care, and have a wonderful weekend and 4th!
