What Vegetables Can I Plant In July

It’s not too late to plant some vegetables in July in my Willamette Valley, Oregon Zone 8 garden. I checked out my Cooperative Extension website to find out what I could still plant this month in my vegetable garden. There are a surprising number of crops I can still plant. Of course, they are tending toward a fall vegetable harvest and even winter vegetable harvest, but there were still things I can plant.

Here are just a few of them:

Beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots cauliflower, celery, chard, Chinese cabbage, endive, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce (head), lettuce (leaf), radish, rutabagas, and turnips.

Now I’m not real big on kale or endive, but I could be persuaded to plant some things I have never tried growing, like rutabagas. They are wonderful in a baked root vegetable mixture. And, of course I love cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and carrots.  I just planted some pole beans along with some carrots.  I may be pushing it, but I even tried cucumbers.

These are just a few of the vegetables that I can plant in my area. Because each location is somewhat different and there are area micro-climates, it may be possible to plant even more vegetables.

So push the envelope, and try to plant something just a little outside the recommendations. (Check your Cooperative Extension). On the other hand, I’m thinking, “Good luck trying to grow lettuce in my hot July sun without some serious protection.” You really never can really tell what will come up or thrive in your garden.
